Week 02/03/14 - 02/07/14
Mon 02/03/14
Students discussed diction. Diction is precise word choice, or good vocabulary. When prompted for an example of a verb, students often give "walk" or "run" as their answer. Today, students expound their view on the verb "walk."
Students traced their shoe on a sheet of printer paper and divided it into three sections. Students filled the top section of their "Walking Shoes" with 10 ways a teenager could get from one side of the room to the other. Then, the middle section with 8 ways a baby could get from one side of the room to another. Finally, the bottom portion 6 ways an elderly person could get from one side of the room to the other. All the while they could not repeat ANY verbs.
HOMEWORK: Begin Unit 8 Week 1 vocab, due Friday. Week quiz on Friday.

Students discussed repetition in language, which is repeating what you are saying. Students brainstormed reasons WHY people repeat themselves. Students were then assigned specific words and asked to count the number of times they were said in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. Students viewed the speech and will discuss it tomorrow.

Thurs 02/06/14 - Congrats on Shark Bites Period 7!
Wrapping up yesterday's lesson on repetition, students wrote a response to yesterday's video of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech. The question is pictured to the left.
Students began discussing prefixes. Prefixes are letters placed in the front of a word to change its meaning.
Examples:
Students viewed a lyric video for Natasha Bedingfield's song, "Unwritten." While the song played, students tallied the number of words they saw that included prefixes.
Students then completed a group practice with manipulates on identifying examples and non-examples of prefixes.
