Students talked about descriptive language, and how it appeals to our senses.
After reading the short story, "Fish Cheeks" by Amy Tan, students were given a note card with a secret location. Students had to write a paragraph describing the location, answering all the questions on the board, WITHOUT stating the name of the location.

Tues 09/24/13
Students traded papers with a partner and had to illustrate the "scene" from yesterday based on the description that their partner had written.
Wed 09/25/13
Students were introduced to the genre of poetry. In groups, students complied all they knew about poetry. Afterwards, we discussed everyone's ideas as a whole group.
Thurs 09/26/13
Students drafted their first poem. They were allowed to choose any topic. The only restrictions were that it had to have a minimum of 20 lines, with 5 words per line.
Fri 09/27/13
Students completed the draft of their first poem and we shared in class.
