Week of 09/16/13 - 09/20/13
Mon 09/16/13
Today students received back their first mini assessment. The papers were graded as follows:
6 = 100
5 = 90
4 = 80
3 = 70
2 = 60
1 = 50
Notes in general:
- You should have chosen ONE right and listed three reasons why that right is the most important.
- We do not use words like "gonna, wanna, u, or kinda" in essays.
As an in-class activity, students reflected on their essays. They were given 3-5 minutes to reread their essays and make notes on a separate sheet of paper regarding things they could have improved upon.
Students then passed their essays and their note sheets to their left and their neighbor was given 3-5 minutes to read and give constructive feedback on their essays. Students rotated their papers three times.
Afterwards, students placed their essays and their planning sheet in their portfolios and marked their score on their progress record.
HOMEWORK: Begin Unit 2 Week 2 Vocab. There will be a quiz on Friday on what we have discussed in class this week, as well as Unit 2 weeks 1 and 2 words.

Tues 09/17/13 - Congrats on earning Shark Bites today!
First we took a look at where we are in the writing process.
- Planning is our PAC, circle map, tree map.
- Drafting is when we write the actual essay.
- Revising is making sure the "meat" of the essay makes sense. (Three E's model)
The Three E's
Next, we looked at the structure of a strong body paragraph. Every sentence in a body paragraph must relate to the one before it.
Below is my example of a paragraph.
- Topic Sentence will tell you the main idea of the entire body paragraph.
- Explanation will clarify what you mean in the body paragraph, restate it in a different way in case the reader does not understand.
- Example is a way to SHOW the reader what you are talking about with a specific instance that they can relate to.
- Elaboration gives more details about your specific example you just gave.
Below is my example of a paragraph.
Finally, students took the body paragraph that I pre-indicated from their mini #1 and revised it to fit the model of the Three E's. Students completed their revision on a note card and labeled each sentence to match the model.

- The pronoun I or any contraction using the pronoun I needs to be capitalized.
- Proper names

- Start of every sentence.
Examples:

I - My sister and I enjoy concerts together.
N - Ms. Taylor and Ms. Blackard run student council at Saint Lucie West K-8 School.
