Week of 08/26/13 - 08/30/13
Mon 08/26/13
We reviewed the code of conduct test.
Vocab Notebooks were passed back and the grading policy was explained. One HW grade is put into Skyward for each Unit of vocab. If you complete all five definitions and sentences for the week, you receive full credit for the homework. Since each unit has three weeks, the HW grade is not put in Skyward until week three. If you complete one week of vocab homework, your grade will be a 33%; complete two weeks of vocab homework, your grade will be a 66%; complete all three weeks to earn a 100% for the unit.
We completed a Jigsaw Activity to break down our current Learning Goal. Each group was responsible for a section of the Learning Goal, and had to put it in their own words. The learning goal is found at score 3 in the document below.
HOMEWORK: Start Unit 1 Week 2 vocab.

Tues 08/27/13
Today in class students set up their writing portfolios. Students will leave them in the classroom and throughout the year add writing samples to them. Students needed a simple, three pronged folder to create their portfolio.
Students began filling out their goal sheets and put them in their portfolios.
Finally, students participated in a group practice activity. Students helped me "unPACk" my suitcase prompts. Students were presented with a writing prompt and had to answer the PAC question for the prompt in their group. Students then came up and wrote their answers on the whiteboard.
HOMEWORK: Continue on Unit 1 Week 2 vocab. Your first quiz is Friday! The quiz will contain what we have discussed in class this week and Unit 1 words 1-10.

Wed 08/28/13
Students completed a reflection notecard answering the following questions:
1. What does our learning goal mean to you?
2. How can smaller goals (targets) help us reach our overall learning goal?
3. What is one skill you need to work on to achieve the learning goal?
Students then created a reference page to put in their portfolio.
Students practiced unPACking prompts in groups, then did the PAC for the following prompt on a separate sheet of paper:
Prompt: There are many places people visit time and time again. Name a place that you like to visit over and over. Plan and write an essay to explain why you like to go to that certain place.
Purpose - Why are we writing? To explain why.
Audience - Who are we writing to? The reader.
Context - What format should we be using? Essay.
Students created a circle map responding to the prompt. After we unPACk the prompt, the prewriting process begins as we brainstorm. Circle maps are used to define in context.

Thurs 08/29/13
We began by listing grocery items and then classifying them into categories. Not everything HAD to fit into a category though.
We moved from brainstorming in circle maps to classifying and organizing our ideas on tree maps. Using the circle map we began yesterday, students grouped "like" ideas using highlighters. They then transferred their ideas onto a tree map, classifying their items into three categories. Finally, students sequenced their categories from least to most important.
HOMEWORK: Finish Unit 1 Week 2 vocab (due tomorrow!) Review items on study guide below for the quiz tomorrow.
