Students began discussing figurative language devices that are used in persuasive writing. See the image to the left for definitions.
Students had to compose a paragraph based on their 01/30/14 journal entry of an invented item. Students were to include one hyperbole and one rhetorical question in their persuasive paragraph.
HOMEWORK: Begin Unit 9 Week 1, due Friday. Quiz Friday.

Tues 02/25/14
Students continued working with persuasive devices. Today's discussion centered around the Greek terms; Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. Students watched three commercials (below) and judged whether ethos, pathos, or logos were at work. Students had to cite the evidence that proved their answer was correct.
Students then worked on independent practice using the image below as their guide.

Students practiced differentiating between similes and metaphors using music. Students examined the lyrics of the video below and dissected the meaning of the similes and metaphors.

Students discussed another figurative language device and one more persuasive technique.
There are two types of irony:
Verbal: Someone says something but actually means the opposite of what they’re saying.

Next, students examined various ProActiv print ads and viewed several Pepsi commercials to see examples of Celebrity Endorsement. Celebrity endorsement is a persuasive technique used to sell products. Marketers figure that the like of the celebrity will transfer to the like of the product they are endorsing.
